chronology of detention(s)
Testimony 2: was arrested on 12 July 2015. The victim was taken to a place that was "one day driving distance" away from the "our place" [presumably meaning the family's hometown].
suspected and/or official reason(s) for detention
Testimony 1: having met regularly with family and friends between 2012 and 2014.
Testimony 2: Abdushukur found out in 2016 that the reason for the victim's detention was that the victim "had a party with together with his friends between 2012 and 2014". The party was a tea party at someone's home, possibly during Ramadan. Gatherings were reportedly not tolerated by the Chinese government at the time. In 2015, the Chinese government reportedly said that people should not hide anything from the government, and if people come forward and confess to previous [illegal] activities, they would not be punished, but if they do not come forward, then they would be punished severely. One of the victim's friends reportedly went to a police station in 2015 and told the police that there had been a gathering between 2012 and 2014. The police then arrested everybody who attended that tea party. The attendees at that tea party were given various prison sentences, ranging from 4 to 17 years.
last reported status
He was sentenced to 10 years and imprisoned alongside 30 other persons who received prison sentences between 4 and 17 years.
Testimony 2: Abdushukur's sister asked the victim about life in prison. The victim reported that he mostly did political study and was working in a factory producing chargers for mobile phones.
how testifier(s) learned of victim's situation
Testimony 2: Abdushukur received a message from his sister on 12 July 2015 saying that the victim had been taken to the police station. The reason was unknown. One day later [on 13 July 2015], "they" [presumably Abdushukur's family in Xinjiang] told Abdushukur that the victim had been "taken away".
Testimony 2: After being told that the victim had been taken away, Abdushukur attempted to contact friends and colleagues to find out where the victim was taken and why, but did not get any answers. After approximately one week, Abdushukur's sister told Abdushukur not to "try anything", that "everything is fine" and that the victim would be "taken away for some time."
Testimony 2: Abdushukur continued to contact people in Xinjiang in relation to the victim to get more information, and after approximately one month, he found out from an unspecified source that the victim had been sentenced to 10 years in prison. [This means that we can say with some level of certainty that the victim was sentenced in the latter half of 2015.]
Testimony 2: Abdushukur's sister left Abdushukur a message at some point in 2016 conveying greetings on behalf of the victim and saying that the victim would like to see Abdushukur "very much". Abdushukur told his sister that he was planning to travel to Xinjiang and would like to see the victim; Abdushukur then asked his sister if she could ask the police whether or not Abdushukur could see the victim. Abdushukur's sister contacted the police and then told Abdushukur that the police would permit the visit one one condition. The condition was that Abdushukur deliver a speech to prisoners explaining that because he was not a religious person, was not partaking in any religious activities, and studied communism very well, he was selected by the Chinese government to study abroad and now has a good life as a result of that. In the speech, he would have also been required to criticise the prisoners in relation to the fact that they did not study communism and decided to practice their religion. Abdushukur refused the offer and did not go to visit the victim.
Testimony 2: Abdushukur once received a letter from the victim, which tried to convey a positive image of the victim's detention, explaining that he does gymnastics, studies Chinese language, works in a factory, and was free to do what he wanted in his own time. The letter also tried to convey a positive image of the food that the victim was supposedly eating in prison. It was obvious to Abdushukur that the victim was being coerced to write the letter.
