Yusup was first detained in the beginning of 2015. For a year, there was no news about him.

In February 2016, he was sentenced formally, originally to 4 years. At some point, this sentence was extended to 8 years. February 2016.

suspected and/or official reason(s) for detention

Previously believed to be "disclosing state secrets".

However, Memet'eli later heard that the actual reason was "falsifying, altering, or buying/selling official government documents, identification, or seals" (伪造、变造、买卖国家机关公文、证件、印章罪), which was a result of him assisting with a photo for a new marriage certificate of a man who was already married. After the person trying to marry a second time was found out, he gave the names of all who had assisted him (under duress, the victim's family suspects), which resulted in Yusup being charged as well. Disclosing state secrets.

Testimony 4: Last and clear reason for his detention is, he was openeing PC Shops and providing also photographing for documents, like for merriage, for ID and so on.
Then he helped for an uyghur couples to take photo for their merriage certificate, but the man was already got married officially, he tried to get married again. My brother wasn't aware of it and send the photo per Wechat. Then after the man was found out and gave the list for every person who envolved.
So my brother was also in the list for "helping illigal merriage", my family thought the man was forced to give fake testimony, so my brother got punished for: 伪造、变造、买卖国家机关公文、证件、印章罪
