testifying party (* direct submission)

Testimony 1*|2|3: Nejmidin Raman, originally from Kashgar but now living in the Netherlands. (grandson)

Testimony 4: Nejmidin Raman, as reported by Radio Free Asia Uyghur. (grandson)

Testimony 5: Nejmidin Raman, as reported by Global Voices. (grandson)

about the victim

Raman Idris was a well-known businessman from Kashgar's Beshkirem Village, who specialized in chemical fertilizers and, from 2008 on, in property development.

He was around 70 at the time of his death.

Address: House No. 50-55, Kokang (No. 14) Village, Qoghan Township, Kashgar City.

current location

He died in Kashgar.

chronology of detention(s)

His property was confiscated in 2015 because of Nejmidin being abroad, with Nejmidin being asked to return. Nejmidin lost contact with the victim at the end of 2015, as he was asked not to call. From relatives abroad, he then learned that he was detained either before or at the beginning of Ramadan 2016 (around June 2016), and had to be taken to the hospital not long after following severe beating, which is where he allegedly passed away.

suspected and/or official reason(s) for detention

Probably for having gone on a pilgrimage to Mecca, or for having a "son" who lived abroad (Nejmidin is registered as his son on his birth certificate).

In his interview to Global Voices, Nejmidin also says that his grandfather was accused of "religious extremism".

last reported status

Deceased.

how testifier(s) learned of victim's situation

Abduweli Ayup, an Uyghur activist, heard it from someone who recently came to Turkey. Nejmidin also got news from other relatives abroad, including an anonymous source originally from Kashgar.

Nejmidin has tried to contact the Chinese embassy in the Netherlands, but they were not forthcoming and would not give him a clear reply, telling him to go to China myself. Local offices in Xinjiang would not pick up the phone or would hang up.

additional information

The victim's assets and property were allegedly seized "in the name of re-education and vocational training".
