Zhong Jun (aliases: Xiao Dong, Xiao Xu) was born on February 2, 1972. He is ethnically Han, has a senior high school education, and had no steady employment at the time of his arrest.
Zhong Jun was allegedly a member of the Church of Almighty God, having joined in or after 2005, and thereafter holding a number of leadership positions within the "Second Line Gospel Team" and "Frontline Gospel Team". He was also allegedly involved in video filming within the Ili Kazak Autonomous Prefecture branch of the church.

The victim was criminally detained on July 30, 2014. Authorities also seized a number of items belonging to the victim that were allegedly used for the activities of the Church of Almighty God.
The victim was initially held at the Yining Detention Center, and formally arrested on September 2, 2014.
On December 3, 2015, the victim was sentenced to 14 years of imprisonment and 5 years of deprivation of political rights.
The victim appealed the December 2015 verdict on the grounds that there was no evidence supporting the charge, but in August 2016, that verdict was upheld by the XUAR High People's Court.

From December 2013 to March 2014, the victim allegedly participated five times in the filming of videos about members of the Church of Almighty God being made to give confessions under duress of torture, and their properties being unlawfully seized by Chinese police.
