As of March 2018, she was being subjected to daily surveillance and visits by the neighborhood cadres, who reported on her emotions and whether or not she had any negative reactions to this surveillance. On March 2, 2018, she and her husband tried to leave Urumqi to go to Changji, having rented a car to move some of their household furniture and equipment to their parents' storage, as the contract on the Urumqi apartment was set to expire on March 8. She was stopped while trying to exit the city jurisdiction, however, with the neighborhood authorities notified immediately, which resulted in Arzigul being brought back to her neighborhood in Urumqi at 1 in the morning on March 3 and severely reprimanded for not having asked for proper leave.
