testifying party

Testimony 1|2: Urumqi police records, as reported by Yael Grauer.

about the victim

Ablikim Memet is a shop owner.

Residential and registration address: Apt. 801, Entrance No. 3, Building No. 2, 22 South Dawan Road, Tianshan District (天山区大湾南路22号2号楼三单元801号).

current location

Urumqi No. 1 Pre-Trial Detention Center.

chronology of detention(s)

He was taken into custody by Urumqi police on June 15, 2018. At some point, he was sent to the No. 1 Vocational Education Center (第一职教中心) [in Urumqi].

A report from early December 2018 notes his wife as "being understanding" of her husband's provisional sentence [suggesting that he was sentenced to a camp term].

Also in December 2018, his wife asked the neighborhood administration to arrange for Ablikim to be released back home to settle some matters (pay the rent for his shop and extend his car registration, both things requiring Ablikim to be present). The neighborhood administration then forwarded the request to relevant authorities, and on December 26, 2018 the neighborhood cadres went to the camp to pick Ablikim up.

On December 27, 2018, it was reported that Ablikim had already been transferred to the Urumqi No. 1 Pre-Trial Detention Center. On January 15, 2019, the Urumqi Intermediate People's Court held a trial for him (and possibly others), with the verdict to be announced in 15 days.

suspected and/or official reason(s) for detention

He was originally taken into custody for being involved in a Nur Movement case [https://www.encyclopedia.com/religion/encyclopedias-almanacs-transcripts-and-maps/nur-movement].

His January 2019 court hearing implicated him in the "6.14 case" [presumably in reference to the attack on police in Mekit County that took place on June 14, 2014].

last reported status

Provisionally sentenced in camp. Now in police custody and on trial.

[It is also possible that he is subjected to forced labor at the No. 1 detention center, as there is some evidence for this practice existing there.]
