about the victim
Habibullah Tohti (海尔布尔·土赫提) is a Uyghur PhD graduate from Al-Azhar University (Testimony 5: his PhD is in Islamic jurisprudence). He is also designated in some sources as an "islamic scholar". He is also a poet, known for his poem "Teklimakan, Horaz we Urumqi".
Testimony 4: he is a father.
Testimony 5: born in 1979, originally from Saghan Town, Yengisar County, Kashgar Prefecture.
current location
[Unclear, as sentenced.]
chronology of detention(s)
Testimony 1: Authorities first detained Tohti in Urumqi in July 2016, after he returned from Egypt, releasing him in January 2017. He was arrested again in March 2017.
Testimony 4: returned to China in 2017 and got arrested in 2018.
suspected and/or official reason(s) for detention
[Most probably related to studying religion in Egypt.]
RFA: Tohti's 2016 detention was linked to his allegedly teaching religion to Uyghur students in Egypt and attending a 2015 religious conference in Saudi Arabia, and to highlighting Uyghur culture in his dissertation. Tohti also reportedly "failed to write or speak out positively about Chinese policies" in the XUAR.
last reported status
Testimony 1: Arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Testimony 4: testifier heard that he was sentenced to 12 years.
Testimony 6: testifier received message that he was sentenced to 20 years.
how testifier(s) learned of victim's situation
Testimony 1: The staff member contacted by RFA presumably had relatively direct knowledge of the case as Tohti applied for a position there.
Testimony 2-4: not stated.
