testifying party

Testimony 1: Anonymous, as reported by Radio Free Asia Uyghur. (from same town/region)

Testimony 2: Local government employee, as reported by Radio Free Asia Uyghur. (from same town/region)

about the victim

Ezimet Seyitahun is the son of Seyitahun Abdukerim. [The victim's surname has been inferred from the first name of his father.]

He is from Böger Village, Azaq Township, Atush, Kizilsu Kyrgyz Autonomous Prefecture.

Ezimet Seyitahun studied in Egypt from 2013 until approximately 2017.

current location

[Unclear, as sentenced.]

chronology of detention(s)

In 2013, Ezimet Seyitahun (the victim) and Ibrahim Seyitahun (brother of victim) were both sent by Seyitahun Abdukerim (father of victim) to study in Egypt.

After Seyitahun Abdukerim (father of victim) returned to China from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan at the behest of Chinese authorities in 2017, Chinese authorities reportedly made Seyitahun Abdukerim (father of victim) "force his sons to return to the XUAR from Egypt." Ezimet Seyitahun (the victim) subsequently returned to China from Egypt, and was detained by Chinese authorities (along with his brother).

Ezimet Seyitahun was later sentenced to imprisonment at the same time as Ibrahim Seyitahun (brother of victim) and Seyitahun Abdukerim (father of victim), presumably in the same trial.

[It is known that the sentence handed to Seyitahun Abdukerim (father of victim) was related to sending Ezimet Seyitahun (the victim) and Ibrahim Seyitahun (brother of victim) to study in Egypt, so it seems likely that the detention and sentencing of Ezimet Seyitahun (the victim) was also related to his studies in Egypt.]

Testimony 2: According to an anonymous employee from a government office in Böger Village, Azaq Township, Atush, Kizilsu Kyrgyz Autonomous Prefecture (as reported by RFA), Ezimet Seyitahun was sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment.

suspected and/or official reason(s) for detention

[The reasons for the victim's arrest and imprisonment were presumably related to his studies in Egypt.]

last reported status

The victim was sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment at some point after 2017, and is presumably still in prison.

how testifier(s) learned of victim's situation

Testimony 1: It is unclear how Zibibulla (the testifier) learnt about the victim's situation.

Testimony 2: Although it is unclear which government department they work for, the anonymous government employee in Böger Village presumably had access to official information relating to the victim.
