about the victim

Zulpiye Jalalidin is married and has two sons. She was previously a math teacher, now retired, at the Urumqi No. 2 middle school and holds a senior teacher qualification.

current location

[Presumably in Urumqi.]

chronology of detention(s)

According to her relatives, Zulpiye was arrested on January 4, 2018, immediately after her return to China from a six-month stay in the United States. In their official correspondence with Australian counterparts, the Chinese authorities claimed that the arrest took place on November 6, 2018, however.

In 2019, her husband posted on Facebook that she had been released for three days for Qurban Eid in August. During that time, her two sons were able to talk with her on the phone. She said that she was grateful to the government, because she became a good woman and good mother through education, while adding that she might "finish school" very soon.

On September 15, 2019, Zulpiye's son Almas received news that his mother had been released and was under house arrest. He was able to have several phone calls with her, under police supervision, until December 25, 2019.

suspected and/or official reason(s) for detention

For "assembling a crowd to disturb social order".

last reported status

Released, but her freedom of movement is restricted and she is under police surveillance.

how testifier(s) learned of victim's situation

Zulpiye's family learned about her initial arrest from Almas's grandparents.

It was later confirmed by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, which got the information from the Chinese authorities.

Later, Zulpiye's sons were also able to talk to her on the phone [presumably with monitoring by the Chinese authorities].
